Why Your Fitness Habits Aren’t Sticking (And What to Do About It)

How to build a fitness habit that sticks

If you’ve ever felt like you’re constantly starting over on your fitness journey, you’re not alone.

Most people approach fitness with the best of intentions: they set ambitious goals, dive headfirst into a new routine, and promise themselves this time will be different.

But a few weeks later? Motivation fades, life gets busy, and those habits start to fall apart.
So why is it so hard to make fitness stick?

Here are the three most common reasons—and what you can do to overcome them:

1. You’re Relying on Motivation Alone

Motivation can be a great starting point, but it’s unreliable. Some days you’ll feel fired up to work out; other days, it’ll be the last thing you want to do.

The fix: Focus on building systems and habits instead of relying on willpower. Create a routine that feels automatic—like brushing your teeth—so you don’t have to think about it every day.

2. Your Goals Aren’t Personal or Specific Enough

“I want to get fit” or “I want to lose weight” are fine starting points, but they’re not enough to keep you going long-term. Generic goals don’t create the emotional connection or excitement you need to stay committed.

The fix: Set goals that are personal, specific, and meaningful to you. Instead of “I want to get fit,” try something like, “I want to run a 5K in three months to feel stronger and more energized.”

3. You’re Taking an All-or-Nothing Approach

Miss one workout or indulge in a treat, and suddenly it feels like the whole week is ruined. This mindset keeps you stuck in a cycle of guilt and starting over.

The fix: Shift to a progress-over-perfection mindset. Celebrate small wins and remind yourself that consistency—not perfection—is what drives results.

Turning Knowledge Into Action

Understanding these roadblocks is the first step to overcoming them. But knowledge alone isn’t enough—you need a plan.

That’s why I created Fitness That Sticks, a self-paced course designed to help you build fitness habits that last.

This isn’t a workout program—it’s a framework for creating a fitness lifestyle that works for you, with strategies for mindset, goal-setting, and staying consistent.
