Why Staying Motivated is Harder Than My Grandma’s Fruitcake

Let’s Get Real About Staying Motivated

Here’s the raw truth about staying motivated that nobody talks about: some days you’ll feel like a productivity god, and other days you’ll lose to a TikTok scroll session at 2AM. I’m writing this after spending 20 minutes “just checking Instagram” that somehow turned into deep-diving my ex’s cousin’s vacation photos. This is the motivation struggle.

My Most Embarrassing Motivation Fails

  • Once spent 45 minutes “researching productivity hacks” instead of actually working
  • Wrote “WAKE UP EARLY” on my mirror in lipstick… slept til noon
  • Bought a $200 online course that I never finished (we’ve all been there)

What Kinda Works (Sometimes)

  1. The 2-Minute Rule (That I Often Ignore)
  2. If it takes less than 2 minutes, do it now. Unless it’s folding laundry because that’s boring and I’d rather rewatch The Office bloopers for the 17th time.
  3. Body Doubling (Fancy Term for “Work While Someone Watches”)
  4. I’ll FaceTime my sister just so she can judge me for not working. Shame is weirdly effective?
  5. “Done is Better Than Perfect” (My New Mantra)
  6. This blog post was supposed to have 10 scientific references. It has… checks notes… one TED Talk link. Good enough!

When All Else Fails

Last Tuesday I was supposed to write 1,000 words. Wrote 37, then took a “quick break” that turned into:

  • Rearranging my bookshelf by color
  • Googling “can you eat expired yogurt”
  • Crying at a dog reunion video

Point is: Some days you win, some days you lose, some days you mainline cold brew and stare at the wall.

My Flawed But Real Advice

  1. Motivation comes and goes like bad cell service
  2. Progress > perfection
  3. If all else fails, take a nap. Seriously.
