Fibre, Digestion And The Sheer Volume Of Food
Eating enough to support heavy training runs into a physical limit set by stomach capacity and transit time, and fibre content determines where that limit sits.

For a lifter eating to gain, the obstacle is often not appetite but capacity. There is a limit to how much food fits, and fibre determines a large part of it.
Fibre adds bulk without adding energy
Dietary fibre is not digested in the small intestine, so it contributes volume and fermentation products rather than substantial usable energy.
That volume occupies stomach space and slows gastric emptying, which produces fullness disproportionate to the energy consumed.
A meal built around vegetables and whole grains can therefore be extremely filling while delivering less energy than a smaller, less bulky alternative.
Transit time governs how quickly capacity frees up
How rapidly the stomach empties depends on the meal's volume, fat content and fibre content, and slower emptying means less room for the next meal.
Someone eating four large high-fibre meals may still be processing the previous one when the next is due, which caps daily intake regardless of intention.
Reducing fibre density in one or two meals a day, particularly around training, is the standard practical adjustment.
Liquid calories bypass part of the problem
Liquids empty from the stomach faster than solids of the same energy content and produce weaker fullness signals.
This is why milk-based drinks and blended meals feature so heavily in the practice of people trying to gain weight deliberately.
The same property makes liquid energy a hazard during restriction, since it delivers substantial intake without the satiety that would normally accompany it.
Cutting fibre too far causes different problems
Fibre supports regular bowel function and feeds the bacteria in the large intestine, which produce compounds relevant to gut health.
Dropping intake sharply in pursuit of capacity produces constipation and discomfort that interfere with training more than the extra food helps.
The workable approach is redistribution rather than reduction, concentrating fibre in meals furthest from training and away from the largest feeds.
Adaptation happens but takes weeks
The digestive system does adjust to sustained higher intake, with enzyme production and gut bacterial populations shifting over a period of weeks.
This is why the first weeks of a deliberate increase feel far worse than the later ones, and why raising intake gradually works better than a sudden jump.
Persistent bloating, pain or altered bowel habit is not a training problem and should be assessed rather than managed with dietary experiments.
