Reading A Nutrition Label Without Being Misled
Serving sizes, per-hundred-gram columns and protein claims on packaging are legally defined but easy to misread, and the errors compound across a whole day of eating.

A nutrition label is accurate and still routinely misread. The confusion comes from how the numbers are framed rather than from the numbers themselves.
The serving size does the most damage
Manufacturers declare values per serving, and the serving is a manufacturer's choice within regulatory conventions. It often bears little relation to how much a person actually eats.
A packet that contains two and a half servings will report a figure that most people mentally treat as the whole packet. The error is not small and it repeats daily.
The reliable habit is to look for the per-hundred-gram column, which is standardised, and then work from the weight actually consumed rather than the declared portion.
Per hundred grams is not per hundred calories
Two foods can look similar per hundred grams while differing enormously in energy density. Water content is the usual reason, and it makes direct comparison unreliable.
A high-water food will show modest numbers across the board simply because most of the mass is water. That does not make it a poor choice, only a poorly comparable one.
Comparing foods by their contribution per unit of energy, rather than per unit of weight, tends to answer the question a lifter is actually asking about protein density.
Protein claims describe the product, not the meal
Front-of-pack protein claims are governed by thresholds relating protein to total energy. A product can meet the threshold while supplying a modest absolute amount per portion.
That is why a snack marketed on protein content can deliver less than a plain portion of an ordinary staple food costing considerably less.
The useful figure is grams per realistic portion. Everything else is packaging language operating within rules that were not written with a lifter's daily total in mind.
Carbohydrate lines are subdivided inconsistently
Labels typically declare total carbohydrate and then a sugars subtotal, and in some regions fibre is counted inside the total while in others it is not.
The sugars line includes sugars naturally present in the food, so dairy and fruit products show figures that alarm people without indicating anything added.
Reading the ingredients list resolves this faster than the panel does, because ingredients appear in descending order by weight and added sugars are named there.
Ingredient lists carry information the panel cannot
The panel gives quantities; the list gives composition. For anyone managing digestion around training, the second is frequently the more practical of the two.
Sugar alcohols, added fibres and fat sources all appear in the list and all affect how a food sits before a session, without changing the headline numbers much.
Anyone with a diagnosed condition affecting digestion or nutrient handling should work from clinical guidance rather than label reading, since the relevant thresholds are individual.
