The Recovery Cost Of Travel And Time Zones

Travel degrades performance through disrupted sleep timing, prolonged immobility and altered eating patterns, and the largest component is usually the shift in body clock rather than fatigue.

Training after travel is reliably worse, and the reasons are more specific than general tiredness. Each component behaves differently and some can be managed in advance.

The body clock does not move with the aircraft

Circadian rhythms are set primarily by light exposure and shift only gradually, at a rate of roughly an hour a day under favourable conditions.

Arriving in a distant time zone therefore means the internal clock is signalling sleep and alertness at the wrong times for several days.

Because maximal force output varies across the day, a session scheduled at local afternoon may fall at the internal small hours, with a measurable cost.

Direction of travel changes the difficulty

The internal clock naturally runs slightly longer than a day, which makes delaying the schedule easier than advancing it.

Westward travel, which lengthens the day, is generally adapted to faster than eastward travel, which requires sleeping earlier than the body wants to.

This is why the same distance travelled in opposite directions produces noticeably different amounts of disruption.

Light exposure is the main lever

Light is the strongest signal the clock responds to, and its timing determines whether it shifts the rhythm forward or backward.

Morning light in the new time zone advances the clock, while evening light delays it, and applying them at the wrong time slows adaptation.

Beginning the shift a few days before departure, by adjusting sleep and light timing gradually, reduces the disruption on arrival.

Immobility and dehydration add to the load

Extended sitting reduces circulation in the legs and produces stiffness that has nothing to do with the time zone.

Cabin air is dry and travel days often involve reduced fluid intake and disrupted meal timing, both of which affect the following session.

These components respond to straightforward measures: moving periodically, maintaining fluid intake and keeping meals roughly on the destination schedule.

What to expect from the first sessions

Planning a light session on the first day, with the demanding work scheduled once the clock has partly adjusted, produces better training than testing readiness immediately.

Reduced coordination and force output after long travel is normal and temporary, and reading it as a loss of fitness leads to unnecessary programme changes.

Anyone with a condition requiring timed medication should take advice on adjusting schedules across time zones rather than improvising.
