Why Recovery Advice Is Hard To Test
Recovery interventions are difficult to study because the outcome is a return to baseline, blinding is nearly impossible, and expectation itself changes how recovered people feel.

Recovery is the area of training where confident advice is most abundant and supporting evidence is thinnest. That is not an accident of neglect; the questions themselves are unusually hard to study.
The outcome is difficult to define
Recovery means returning to a previous state, so measuring it requires knowing what that state was and having a measure sensitive enough to detect the difference.
Different measures disagree. Soreness, jump performance, maximal force and blood markers of muscle damage recover on different schedules and can point in opposite directions on the same day.
A method that improves one of them and not the others can be described accurately as effective or ineffective depending on which measure the description chose.
Blinding is close to impossible
A participant knows whether they were immersed in cold water, wore compression garments or received a massage. There is no version of those interventions the recipient cannot identify.
Expectation is a genuine contributor to perceived recovery, so an unblinded trial of something people believe works will tend to show that it works.
Sham comparisons exist but are weak. A convincing placebo for a cold plunge has yet to be devised, which limits how strong the evidence can become.
The signal is small and the noise is large
Day-to-day variation in performance from sleep, food, stress and menstrual cycle phase is often as large as the effect a recovery method is expected to produce.
Detecting a small effect against that background requires large samples, and studies in trained populations are usually small because trained participants are scarce and demanding to recruit.
Many published results therefore sit within the range that chance alone could produce, which is why the literature contains so many contradictory findings.
Short-term and long-term answers can differ
A method can accelerate the return of performance for the next session while blunting the adaptation that the training was intended to cause, since some of the disruption is part of the signal.
That distinction matters differently for an athlete competing in two days than for a lifter in the middle of a training block, and a single study rarely addresses both cases.
It also means the same intervention can be correctly recommended in one context and correctly discouraged in another.
Reading recovery claims with that in mind
Claims that a method produces a large, reliable effect are inconsistent with how difficult the effects are to detect, which is itself informative.
Sleep and adequate food are exceptions in that the evidence for their importance is comparatively strong, largely because their absence produces effects big enough to see.
For everything else, the reasonable position is that the effects are modest, individually variable, and unlikely to be settled by any single study.
