Why Rehab Progress Is Rarely A Straight Line
Recovery from injury proceeds through overlapping biological phases at different rates, and symptom fluctuation during that process is expected rather than evidence of setback.

People recovering from an injury expect steady improvement and interpret any bad day as a relapse. The underlying biology does not proceed evenly, and the fluctuation is a feature of the process.
The phases overlap rather than follow
Tissue healing is conventionally described in phases: an inflammatory response, a period of repair in which new tissue is laid down, and a long remodeling phase in which it is reorganized.
Those phases overlap substantially, and different structures within the same injury progress at different rates.
Remodeling in particular continues for months after function has returned, which is why tissue can feel normal while still being structurally immature.
Symptoms and tissue state are loosely coupled
Pain is generated by the nervous system from many inputs, of which tissue state is only one, so it does not track healing closely.
Sleep, stress, general activity and expectation all shift pain sensitivity, which means symptoms can worsen on a day when nothing about the tissue changed.
This is why clinicians track function alongside pain, since what a person can do is often a better indicator than how much it hurts.
Loading tolerance moves in steps
Tissue capacity increases in response to loading, but the response takes days, so an increase in load is followed by a period where tolerance is temporarily lower.
The pattern that produces is a rise, a dip and a higher plateau, repeated. A person measuring only the dip concludes the progression failed.
Distinguishing a normal response to a load increase from a genuine flare is one of the harder judgments in rehabilitation and a central reason to have a clinician involved.
Different tissues on different clocks
Muscle has a good blood supply and repairs comparatively quickly. Tendon and ligament are less vascular and adapt over much longer periods.
Bone follows its own timeline again, and cartilage has a limited capacity for repair, which is why the expected course differs so much by structure.
Recovery of confidence in a movement often lags behind all of them, particularly after an injury that occurred during a specific lift.
Why the timeline given is a range
Published recovery times describe averages across populations, and individual variation is wide enough that a single figure is misleading.
Age, prior injury, general health, sleep, nutrition and the loading history before the injury all move the individual course.
A rehabilitation plan is therefore adjusted against observed response rather than run to a schedule, which is work for a physical therapist rather than a template found online.
