The overhead press: the lift most people set up wrong
Pressing overhead is the most honest test of upper body strength and the one most compromised by a poor starting position and a trunk that does not hold.

The strict overhead press is unforgiving. There is nowhere to hide: no arch to shorten the range, no leg drive if you are doing it strictly, no stretch reflex off a bench. It is also the lift where a small setup error costs the most.
The rack position
The bar starts on the front of the shoulders, resting on the deltoids, not held in the air by the arms. If your arms are supporting the bar before the press begins, you have started fatigued.
Elbows slightly in front of the bar, wrists stacked over the elbows, and the bar close to the throat. The bar being too far forward is the most common fault and it makes the first few centimetres of the press enormously harder because the moment arm is longer.
Grip width just outside shoulder width for most people — narrow enough that the forearms are near vertical, wide enough that the wrists are comfortable.
Wrists should be as straight as possible. A hyperextended wrist under load hurts and leaks force. If the wrist position is uncomfortable, the grip is probably too wide or the bar is sitting too high in the palm — it should sit low, near the heel of the hand, over the forearm bones.
The path around your head
The bar has to get past your face. The efficient solution is to move your head out of the way rather than to press the bar around it.
As the bar leaves the shoulders, pull the head back slightly — chin tucked, not tilted up — and once the bar has cleared, push the head and torso forward through the gap so the bar finishes over the middle of the foot with the head in front of it.
That final position matters. A bar that finishes in front of the body is being held by the shoulders against a long lever, and it will not lock out heavy. Overhead means genuinely overhead: bar over the shoulders, shoulders over the hips, hips over the middle of the foot, all stacked.
Bracing is the whole lift
Standing with a load overhead is a trunk stability problem before it is a shoulder strength problem.
Take a full breath before the press and brace hard — the abdominal wall tight all the way round, ribs down rather than flared. The most common failure in a heavy press is not the shoulders giving out; it is the lifter leaning back into lumbar extension because the trunk did not hold.
Squeeze the glutes. This is genuinely useful: it prevents the pelvis tipping forward and stops the lower back arching to compensate.
If you find yourself leaning back to press the weight, the weight is too heavy for your current bracing capacity, whatever your shoulders can do.
Where people go wrong
Flared ribs and an arched back. Converts an overhead press into an inclined bench press performed standing, with the lumbar spine loaded in extension. Ribs down, glutes tight.
Pressing forward rather than up. Usually caused by starting with the bar too far forward, or by not moving the head back.
Shrugging too early. The shoulder blades should rotate upward as the bar passes the head — that upward rotation is normal and necessary. Shrugging at the start, before the bar has moved, is not.
Not finishing. The lockout includes the shoulders coming through under the bar with the elbows fully extended and the traps engaged at the top. A press that stops with the elbows soft is not finished.
Strict press versus push press
Both are useful and they train different things.
The strict press builds pure pressing strength and trunk stability. It is limited by the weakest point in the range, which is usually just off the shoulders.
The push press uses a short dip and drive from the legs to get the bar moving, allowing considerably more weight and loading the top portion of the range and the lockout. Useful as an overload tool.
Keep the dip shallow and vertical — a deep dip becomes a squat and a forward dip sends the bar out in front.
Shoulder health
Overhead pressing is often blamed for shoulder problems, and the relationship is more nuanced. Pressing overhead with adequate mobility and control is generally fine and probably beneficial.
The people who have trouble are usually those with insufficient thoracic extension or shoulder flexion, who compensate by arching the lower back, and those with a large imbalance between pressing and pulling volume.
Two practical measures: check whether you can raise your arms overhead against a wall with your lower back flat — if you cannot, work on that before loading it heavily. And keep pulling volume at least equal to pressing volume across the week.
If overhead pressing genuinely hurts, landmine pressing, incline pressing and dumbbell work at a comfortable angle are all reasonable substitutes while you address the underlying restriction.
