What A One-Rep Max Actually Measures
A maximum single is a performance on a given day under given conditions, and treating it as a fixed property of a lifter misreads how variable that measurement is.

The one-repetition maximum is the standard unit of strength in lifting. It is a real measurement, but it measures a performance rather than a capacity, and the distinction has practical consequences.
The number depends on conditions
Maximal force output varies with sleep, food intake, stress, time of day, temperature and how recent the previous hard session was.
The size of that variation is not trivial. The same lifter tested across a fortnight can produce results differing by a meaningful margin without any change in underlying strength.
Treating a single test as a fixed value therefore builds a programme on a number that was partly determined by the conditions of one afternoon.
It includes a large skill component
A maximal attempt is a technical performance under conditions where technique is hardest to maintain. Familiarity with attempting maximal loads changes the result substantially.
Lifters who rarely go near a true maximum typically test below what their training would predict, because the specific skill of a maximal attempt is unpractised.
This is why testing more often can raise the number without any change in muscle, and why comparisons between lifters with different testing habits are unreliable.
Estimation formulas carry their own errors
Predicting a maximum from a set of several repetitions relies on assumptions about the relationship between load and repetitions, and that relationship varies between people and between lifts.
Some lifters produce many repetitions at a high percentage of their maximum, while others cannot. Both are normal, and a formula built on an average will misestimate both.
The error also grows with the number of repetitions used, so estimates from sets of ten are considerably less reliable than those from sets of three.
Percentage-based programming inherits the problem
If the reference number is uncertain, every prescribed load derived from it is uncertain by the same proportion, and the error compounds across a block.
This is the argument behind autoregulated approaches, which set effort relative to the day rather than to a number recorded weeks ago.
Percentages remain useful as a planning device provided they are treated as a starting estimate that the session is allowed to correct.
What it is still good for
As a competition result or a repeated benchmark under consistent conditions, a maximal single tracks change over time reasonably well.
Its value comes from repetition under the same protocol, which is why the trend across several tests carries more information than any individual figure.
Testing frequently, on the other hand, costs recovery for information that changes slowly, which is why most structured programmes test rarely.
