Breathing Between Reps On Long Sets
Holding pressure stabilises the trunk but cannot be sustained across many repetitions, which makes where and how a lifter breathes a technical decision rather than an afterthought.

Bracing advice is usually written for heavy sets of a few repetitions. On sets of ten or more, the same instruction becomes impossible, and lifters improvise badly.
Why pressure helps in the first place
Air held against a closed airway, combined with contraction of the abdominal wall, raises pressure inside the trunk and increases its resistance to bending.
A stiffer trunk transmits force more efficiently between the hips and the load, and reduces the amount of movement the spine has to control under compression.
The effect is largest where the trunk is under high compressive load, which is why the technique is emphasised for squats and deadlifts rather than for isolation work.
Holding it across many reps is not viable
Sustaining that pressure raises blood pressure sharply and reduces venous return to the heart, which produces the light-headedness lifters recognise from long heavy sets.
It also cannot be maintained without breathing for long enough to complete a set of fifteen, so a breath has to occur somewhere.
The decision is therefore where to take it, not whether to, and the answer follows the mechanics of the specific movement.
Breathing at the least demanding position
The general approach is to breathe at the point in the range where the load is least demanding on the trunk, and to hold through the section where stability matters most.
In a squat that is the standing position; in a bench press it is the top of the press; in a row it is the moment of least trunk demand rather than mid-pull.
Breathing mid-repetition, where the trunk is under its greatest bending demand, is where the position most often collapses on a fatiguing set.
Partial breaths keep some pressure
Fully exhaling and re-inhaling between every repetition costs time and loses the braced position entirely. Many lifters use a shorter exchange that retains some pressure.
This works reasonably at moderate loads and becomes unreliable as the weight rises, at which point a full reset per repetition is the more secure option.
Which approach applies depends on the load relative to maximum rather than on the exercise, which is why the same lifter uses both.
Where this needs medical input
The blood pressure response to sustained pressure is substantial, and it is relevant for anyone with high blood pressure, a cardiac condition, glaucoma or a history of hernia.
These are not reasons to avoid training, but they are reasons to have the bracing approach reviewed by a clinician who knows the individual case.
Fainting, chest discomfort or visual disturbance during a set is not a normal cost of a hard effort and should be investigated rather than trained through.
