Choosing Between Full-Body And Split Schedules
Full-body and split schedules differ mainly in how they distribute a fixed amount of work across a week, and the choice depends on session count more than on preference.

The argument between full-body training and body-part splits is usually framed as a matter of philosophy. It is more accurately a question of how a fixed weekly amount of work is distributed across whatever sessions exist.
What the two structures actually differ on
A full-body session touches most major movement patterns each time. A split concentrates on a subset and covers the rest on other days, so each muscle group is trained less often but with more work per occasion.
Weekly totals can be identical under both. The difference is the packet size: many small doses spread out, or fewer larger doses concentrated.
Because the total can be held constant, most direct comparisons between the two find far less separation than the surrounding argument suggests.
Why session count decides most of it
With two or three sessions available in a week, a split leaves each muscle group trained roughly once. Full-body distribution keeps the frequency reasonable within the same time budget.
With five or six sessions, a full-body structure means training everything five or six times, which becomes difficult to recover from and long to execute. A split becomes the practical way to organize that many days.
The schedule therefore tends to select the structure rather than the other way around. Choosing a split first and then finding only two days available creates the mismatch most often seen in practice.
Session length and what fits inside it
Full-body sessions carry more distinct exercises, and with adequate rest between sets the session lengthens quickly. Time in the building is a real constraint for most people.
Splits allow shorter, denser sessions because fewer patterns are covered. That suits people whose limitation is the length of a single visit rather than the number of visits.
Fatigue within a session behaves differently too. Later exercises in a long full-body session are performed on a more tired system, which affects what those exercises can reasonably ask for.
The fatigue distribution question
Concentrating a muscle group's weekly work into one session produces more local fatigue and a longer window before that tissue is ready again. Spreading it produces less soreness per session.
For people training around physical work or other sport, the smoother distribution can matter more than any adaptation difference, because it changes how they feel on the days between.
This is where individual response varies enough that a general recommendation is not useful, and where a qualified coach who can observe the response is worth more than a template.
Why the debate persists anyway
Both structures work when the weekly work is comparable, so both accumulate advocates with genuine results. Neither camp is looking at evidence the other lacks.
The disagreement survives because people compare their own well-executed version against a poorly executed version of the alternative, which is not a comparison of structures.
Framing the decision around available days and available session length resolves it faster than any argument about which approach is superior.
