Foot Position And How The Floor Transmits Force
Every barbell lift performed standing routes force through the feet, and stance width, rotation and pressure distribution decide which joints are asked to do the work.

The feet are the only contact point with the ground in most lifts, which makes them the interface through which all force must pass. Small changes there propagate up the chain.
Ground reaction force sets the terms
Pushing into the floor produces an equal push back, and that returning force is what moves the bar. Its line of action begins at the foot and runs upward through the body.
Where pressure sits on the foot determines where that line starts. Pressure forward of the midfoot shifts the balance point forward, and the body compensates somewhere above.
This is why cues about foot pressure change a squat more than cues about the torso do. The foot is upstream of everything else in the chain.
Stance width alters joint contribution
A wider stance shortens the effective distance the hips travel and increases the demand on the muscles that abduct and rotate the hip. A narrower stance shifts demand toward the knees.
Neither is correct in isolation. The appropriate width depends on hip structure, limb proportions and what the lifter is trying to train.
Hip anatomy varies considerably between individuals in socket depth and orientation, which is why a stance that feels natural to one lifter feels impossible to another.
Toe rotation follows the hip, not the other way round
Turning the feet out allows the femur to rotate outward as the hip flexes. Restricting that rotation while asking for depth forces the compensation to occur elsewhere.
The knees should travel roughly over the line of the feet through the movement. Where they diverge sharply from that line under load, the position is worth examining.
Adjusting rotation is a cheap experiment. It requires no equipment and its effect on depth and comfort shows up within a few repetitions.
Footwear changes the geometry
A raised heel effectively adds ankle range, allowing the knee to travel further forward and the torso to stay more upright. That redistributes demand toward the quadriceps.
A flat, firm sole keeps the ankle angle unchanged and suits lifts where the objective is a stable base rather than additional knee travel, such as the deadlift.
Compressible soles introduce movement between the foot and the floor, which costs stability. The effect is small at light loads and noticeable at heavy ones.
Consistency is what makes the setup useful
A position that changes between sets makes it impossible to tell whether a difference in performance came from the load, the fatigue or the stance.
Marking a stance width relative to the platform or the bar knurling removes that variable, which matters more as the loads climb.
The aim is not a universally optimal foot position but a repeatable one, chosen deliberately and then held long enough to learn what it does.
