Learning A Lift From Video Without Misleading Yourself
Filming your own lifts is the cheapest technique tool available, but camera angle, frame rate and choice of rep determine whether the footage informs or misleads.

Video has replaced the coach for most lifters, and it works reasonably well. It also produces confident conclusions from footage that could not support them, largely because of how it was shot.
Angle determines what is visible
A camera positioned at an angle introduces perspective distortion, and depth judgements made from such footage are unreliable. Squat depth in particular is routinely misjudged this way.
A side-on view at roughly hip height gives the most usable information for hinging and squatting movements, because the joint angles of interest lie in that plane.
Pressing movements often need a second angle, since the relevant question involves the path of the bar relative to the shoulder rather than the sagittal plane alone.
Height and distance matter as much as angle
A camera on the floor exaggerates depth, and one above hip height understates it. Neither can be corrected mentally with any accuracy.
Distance affects the same judgement through lens perspective, with closer positions distorting more. Placing the camera further back and accepting a smaller subject gives cleaner geometry.
Because these effects are systematic, the practical answer is to fix the position and reuse it, so that comparisons across weeks reflect the lifter rather than the setup.
Choosing which repetition to review
The first repetition of a set is usually the cleanest and the least representative. Technique under fatigue is what determines outcomes on heavy attempts.
Reviewing the last two repetitions of a hard set shows where the pattern degrades and in what order, which is the information a change of technique would need to act on.
A single perfect repetition proves the position is available, not that it is reliable, and those are different claims.
Slow motion introduces its own errors
Standard frame rates blur fast movement, and slowing that footage magnifies the blur rather than revealing detail. Higher frame rates capture the transitions that matter.
Freeze frames also invite over-analysis of positions the body passes through in a fraction of a second, which may be entirely normal in a movement that ends well.
The useful unit of review is the sequence, not the frame. What happened before a position usually explains it better than the position itself.
Comparing yourself to a lifter built differently
Elite footage is not a template. Limb proportions, torso length and hip structure determine what positions are available, and copying an incompatible position creates problems rather than solving them.
The transferable elements are principles such as bracing, bar position over the midfoot and consistent sequencing. The specific joint angles are individual.
Comparing today's footage to your own from three months ago answers a more useful question than any comparison to someone else does.
