Tempo Cues And What Slowing A Lift Changes
Deliberately controlling the speed of each phase alters time under tension, momentum and the load that can be used, and each of those changes points in a different direction.

Tempo prescriptions specify how long each phase of a repetition should take. They change several things at once, which is why their effects are frequently misattributed.
Slowing the lowering phase removes stored energy
A controlled descent dissipates the elastic energy that a rapid one would store and return, so the lift begins from a genuinely static condition.
This makes the movement harder at the same load, which is often mistaken for a superior stimulus rather than a reduction in mechanical assistance.
It does have a real benefit: the position at the bottom becomes deliberate rather than a consequence of momentum, which helps a lifter learn where they actually are.
The load has to fall to accommodate the tempo
Extending the duration of each repetition means less weight can be handled, and mechanical tension on the muscle is closely tied to the load.
Trading load for time is therefore not obviously favourable, and the evidence suggests very slow tempos produce less growth than moderate ones at the same effort.
The practical implication is that tempo work belongs alongside normally paced work rather than replacing it in a programme built for size or strength.
Time under tension is a poor target on its own
Accumulating time under load is easy to achieve with light weights and does not reliably produce the same result as accumulating hard sets.
The muscle responds to tension in its fibres and to the recruitment achieved, and a slow light set can be long without ever recruiting the larger motor units.
Duration is a description of a set rather than a mechanism, which is why prescribing it directly tends to disappoint.
Where tempo earns its place
Learning a movement benefits from slowing it, because positions can be felt and corrected rather than passed through at speed.
Tempo also allows a session to be productive at reduced load, which suits a return from injury, a deload week, or training with limited equipment.
Paused variations serve a related purpose by removing assistance at a specific point, which targets a weakness more precisely than a general slowdown does.
Intent to move fast is a separate variable
Attempting to accelerate a heavy load produces high recruitment even when the bar moves slowly, because the intent determines the neural drive rather than the observed speed.
This is why deliberately slowing the lifting phase of a heavy set is generally counterproductive: it reduces the drive without reducing the effort required.
Controlled lowering combined with an intent to accelerate on the way up captures most of the benefit of tempo work without paying its main cost.
