Training Blocks That Run Longer Than You Expect
Adaptations to a given training emphasis continue accruing well past the point where progress feels visible, which is why short blocks often waste the work that preceded them.

Block length is usually chosen by feel, and feel tends to shorten it. The adaptations a block is meant to produce generally take longer than the lifter's patience for the block.
Adaptation lags the training that causes it
The changes driven by a block of work are not complete when the block ends. Tissue remodelling and neural adaptation both continue for a period afterwards.
This delay means the visible payoff of several weeks of work often appears during the following weeks, when the training emphasis has already changed.
A lifter who switches emphasis every three weeks may therefore never see what any given block produced, and attributes the eventual result to whichever block happened to be running.
Early weeks are absorbed by fatigue
A new emphasis introduces unfamiliar work, and unfamiliar work costs more. The first weeks are partly spent absorbing that cost rather than accumulating useful adaptation.
Performance during those weeks tends to be flat or slightly depressed, which reads as the block failing. It is more often the block starting.
Ending it there discards the portion where the accumulated work would have begun expressing itself, and pays the entry cost again with the next change.
Skill accumulation needs repetition at stable settings
Technique improves with repetitions of a consistent movement under consistent conditions. Changing exercises frequently resets that accumulation before it compounds.
This matters most for the lifts that are technically demanding, where the difference between a competent and a well-grooved pattern is worth a substantial amount of weight.
Longer blocks give the pattern time to stabilise under progressively heavier loads, which is a different thing from simply doing the lift more often.
Length has an upper bound too
Blocks do not extend indefinitely. Fatigue accumulates, the stimulus becomes familiar, and the same work eventually produces less response than it did initially.
The signal is usually a plateau that persists after a reduction in load, rather than a single poor session. One bad week is noise.
Most structured approaches therefore run an emphasis for a period of weeks rather than months, then change something meaningful and allow fatigue to dissipate.
What to change when the block ends
The productive change is usually to the emphasis, not to every variable at once. Altering exercises, volume, intensity and frequency simultaneously makes the next block uninterpretable.
Holding the main lifts constant while shifting the volume and intensity balance preserves skill accumulation while still changing the stimulus.
That approach also leaves a record worth reading later, because only one thing moved and its effect can be attributed with some confidence.
