What Filming From The Side Misses

A side-on camera captures bar path and joint angles but hides rotation, side-to-side shifts and grip asymmetry, which is why single-angle video misleads people reviewing their own lifts.

Filming a lift from the side has become the default way to review technique, and it does show the things most often discussed. It also hides an entire class of faults that never appear in that plane.

What the side view is good at

A camera level with the bar and perpendicular to it renders bar path clearly, which is why the view became standard. Vertical drift forward or backward is visible immediately.

Joint angles in the plane of movement also read well: hip and knee position in a squat, the relationship of the bar to the shoulder in a press, the back angle in a deadlift.

Because those are the features most coaching language refers to, the side view feels comprehensive. It is comprehensive only for movement that stays in one plane.

The faults that stay invisible

Lateral shift is the most common one. A lifter drifting toward one side under load looks unchanged from the side, because the movement is happening along the camera's line of sight.

Rotation is similarly hidden. A bar that finishes with one end ahead of the other, or hips that turn slightly during a pull, produce almost no side-on signature.

Uneven bar height between hands, uneven foot pressure and differences between limbs all fall into the same category: real, consequential, and outside the plane being recorded.

Why the hidden faults matter more

Asymmetry concentrates load on one side, and repeated loading of that kind is the pattern associated with complaints appearing on one side rather than both.

It also tends to be invisible to the lifter, because the sensation of being symmetrical is unreliable and does not correspond well to what is actually happening.

A lifter reviewing only side-on footage can spend months correcting bar path while the asymmetry that is actually producing discomfort goes unrecorded.

Camera placement details that distort

Height matters. A camera on the floor or held at eye level introduces perspective distortion that makes a vertical bar path look curved and a neutral spine look flexed.

Distance matters too, since a phone close to the lifter exaggerates whichever part of the body is nearest the lens.

Placing the camera at roughly hip height, several paces back, and perpendicular to the bar removes most of that distortion, and keeping the position consistent is what makes footage comparable week to week.

Using more than one angle

Recording from the front or back on some sets, and from a forty-five degree angle on others, catches the faults the side view structurally cannot.

Few people need every angle every session. Rotating the camera position across a training week gives coverage without turning every session into a filming exercise.

Where footage shows a persistent one-sided pattern, particularly one accompanied by pain, that is a reason to see a physical therapist rather than to keep adjusting the setup alone.
