What Testing Weeks Are For, And What They Cost
Testing weeks convert training into a measurement, but a maximum attempt carries fatigue and risk, which is why the frequency of testing is itself a programming decision.

A testing week interrupts training to measure it. That measurement has value, and it also has a price in fatigue, recovery time and risk that is easy to overlook.
Why measurement is separated from training
Training sessions are conducted under accumulated fatigue, which means the weights moved in them understate what the lifter is capable of. They are not clean measurements.
A testing week typically reduces preceding work so that the attempt is made in a recovered state, which is what makes the number comparable to a previous test conducted the same way.
Without that separation, a rising or falling training weight could reflect either genuine change or the fatigue state of the week it was recorded in.
What a maximum attempt actually costs
A true maximum effort is a high-stress event. It produces considerable neural and muscular fatigue, and the days following it are usually unsuitable for heavy work.
It is also the single highest-risk moment in most training structures, because the load is at its ceiling and the margin for a technical error is smallest.
That combination is why testing tends to be placed at the end of a block rather than distributed through it, and why the frequency of testing is a deliberate decision rather than a default.
Alternatives that cost less
Submaximal testing uses a known weight for as many repetitions as can be completed with sound technique, which produces a comparable figure at lower risk.
Velocity-based approaches infer proximity to a maximum from how fast a submaximal weight moves, though the equipment for that is more common in collegiate and professional settings than in commercial gyms.
Both give up some precision at the top end in exchange for a measurement that does not consume a week of recovery.
Whether the number is needed at all
Testing earns its cost when a decision depends on it: a competition entry, a percentage-based block that requires an accurate starting figure, or a return-to-training assessment.
When no decision depends on the number, the test is being run for reassurance, and reassurance is available more cheaply from training records that already show whether work is getting easier.
People preparing for a meet have an obvious reason to test. People training for general strength frequently do not, and test anyway.
What a test cannot tell you
A single maximum reflects the day it was performed on, including sleep, food, stress and how the warm-up went. It is one observation, not a stable property of a person.
Comparing tests conducted under different preparation, in different facilities, with different equipment, produces differences that have nothing to do with strength.
Anyone testing after an injury, or returning to maximal work after a layoff, is in the situation where a physical therapist or qualified coach should be involved rather than a number pursued alone.
