Why Technique Degrades Before A Set Ends

Form breaks down predictably as a set progresses, and the sequence in which it fails reveals which link in the chain is limiting the lift.

The last repetitions of a hard set never look like the first. That degradation follows a pattern, and reading it tells a lifter more than watching a fresh repetition does.

Stabilisers fatigue before prime movers

Muscles holding a position work continuously through a set, while the prime movers work in bursts and recover briefly between repetitions.

Continuous low-level contraction restricts blood flow to those muscles, which accelerates their fatigue relative to the muscles doing the visible work.

This is why upper back position in a squat and trunk position in a deadlift usually degrade before the legs or hips actually fail.

The body substitutes a different pattern

When one contributor fatigues, the nervous system redistributes the task to whatever else can produce force, which changes the movement's shape.

The hips rising early in a squat, the elbows flaring in a press and the bar drifting forward in a deadlift are all examples of this substitution.

The substitution is not a discipline failure. It is the system solving the problem with the resources still available.

The order of failure is diagnostic

Whatever gives way first is the limiting element for that lifter on that lift, and it is the most productive target for supporting work.

A lifter whose upper back rounds before their legs slow needs upper back capacity rather than more squatting volume.

Because this only becomes visible under fatigue, reviewing the final repetitions of hard sets is where the information is, not the first repetition.

Some degradation is acceptable and some is not

A small increase in trunk lean or a slight slowing of the bar is a normal consequence of fatigue and does not require the set to be stopped.

A change that shifts load onto a structure poorly positioned to accept it, such as a sudden loss of spinal position under a heavy load, is a different matter.

The practical rule most coaches use is to end the set when the movement pattern changes qualitatively rather than merely slows.

Practising under fatigue has limits

Some exposure to fatigued repetitions is necessary, since competition and hard sets both require holding position when tired.

Repeatedly practising a degraded pattern, however, is still practice, and the pattern being reinforced is the wrong one.

Most of the accumulated repetitions in a programme should therefore be performed in good position, with fatigued work occupying a small and deliberate share.
